The main components of a vacuum cooler (1/2)

1. Vacuum chamber

The vacuum chamber must be large enough to maintain the batch and working gaps for each cycle to allow for possible future changes in stacking of serious pallets or stack sizes. We offer a range of chambers that can accommodate single or dual rail conveyor systems. Any combination of batch and tray size can be designed into our system. The chamber door can be a manual or automatic sliding or vertical lifting.

Besides, the chamber must be strong enough to bear the huge pressure difference, especially when the chamber is basically in vacuum condition (200-300pa)

2. Vacuum pump

This is used for the initial evacuation of the vessel, from atmospheric pressure to the flash point of the water. After reaching the flash point, the efficiency of the pump is limited by the performance of the refrigeration system. In general, we will adjust the size of the vacuum pump to 5-8 minutes to reach the flash point. The type of pump that is usually used is the oil seal vane design, or a combination of water-ring pump + roots pump design.

3. Refrigeration system

Once the pressure reaches the flash point, the water begins to evaporate from the surface of the product. It is this evaporation that achieves cooling. In the vacuum chamber, for example, 1000 kg of product per cycle, 1860 m3 of steam will be produced and pumped out from the chamber. In practice, the vacuum pump is too difficult to handle, so a freezer coil evaporator (we call it “water catcher”) is installed in the chamber to re-condense the steam back into the water - the refrigeration unit is actually like a vacuum pump. The size of the refrigeration unit has a significant impact on the cooling cycle time. Usually, each cycle takes 18 – 30mins.
